In our Tla-o-qui-aht worldview the natural world is a mirror of the spiritual realm. All of our actions are simultaneously inhabiting these two spaces and our traditional songs and dances bring our physical selves back into spiritual alignment. As I have been studying our masks and regalia, I am the most fascinated by our repeating elements of transformation. Many of our stories speak about our abilityto go through experiences that shift us into new forms. When I became a mother, I felt a shift deeper inside me than ever before and when I gave birth, I bloomed.
The Nootka rose runs wild on the northwest coast and has soft pink flowers that release a sweet intoxicating aroma through the forest.
